Everyone has a hard time with breast cancer. And when you first receive your diagnosis, the natural reaction is to label it a medical emergency that you have to fix right away. Everyone thinks that they need surgery tomorrow. “Get it out of me! I just want it out now!” And that’s an understandable and very valid feeling. But in reality, you have time to think about your options and your goals before we book an operating room. I tell all of my patients: Breast cancer is not a medical emergency. An emergency would mean that it’s an urgent, time-sensitive, immediate problem that needs attention ASAP. Breast cancer is none of those things. It is not an emergency that needs an immediate response. The cancer is not spreading as we speak. It is not causing new problems or pain every day. The real emergency is your emotional response. Breast cancer is an emotional emergency. Too many patients respond to their diagnosis emotionally and make decisions too quickly, without the right information, without advice from their team or without second opinions, and eventually regret their decision. We know that our job here is to help you work through those emotions and not let those emotions take control of your treatment. You don’t have to feel rushed into making your treatment decisions. You have time. Time to choose your medical team and get to know them and get comfortable with them. Time to understand your diagnosis and explore options. Time to set goals and priorities that will guide your unique treatment plan.
