Badish filed an FIR in may 2013 and few days later Badish along with a female friend was found dead under mysterious in his house in Gurgaon. Police registered a case of suicide but was his murder linked to him disclosing the betting racket? The murder-suicide case of Delhi Police Special Cell inspector Badrish Dutt and his female friend Geeta Sharma, who worked as a detective, has brought into focus the relationship between officers and private investigators. Was Dutt helping her get information, or was it the other way round? The two were close to each other due to reasons other than professional as well. Both had had failed marriages: while Sharma was a divorcee, Dutt's wife had reportedly filed a divorce plea in a Faridabad court because of his alleged extra-marital affairs. Furthermore, their professional dependence on each other made them partners in distress. The relationship between Dutt and Sharma went sour when a crime branch team raided her house in Gurgaon in the former's presence a couple of months ago. Sharma had nurtured a grievance against Dutt as she assumed that he had leaked secret information about her. Similarly, Dutt was upset over Sharma using information from him to forge documents for her own benefit. The two were found shot dead in Sharma's house in Gurgaon .The post-mortem examination of the bodies revealed that the police officer had shot the woman in her head following which he committed suicide. Who benefited from whom is a question whose answer investigators have been trying to find out, but the officer-private detective relationship has always been mysterious. Both say they do not need each other but they often work together. The recent case is just an example of this relationship going sour. Another example is that of Anurag Singh, a cyber expert who worked for Delhi Police but later went rogue. Singh had helped police in solving a number of cases, including DPS MMS scandal, but he later went on to tap Amar Singh's phone and was arrested by the police. Association of Private Detectives and Investigators chairman Kunwar Vikram Singh told Mail Today: "Policemen do need the help of private detectives a number of times. Whenever they approach us, we have helped them. "People who are ex-servicemen work as private detectives as they have an idea about the investigation job. When policemen take our services, we do the investigation and hand over the details to them for legal action." A senior police officer said: "We don't need services of private detectives in most of the investigations. "We have enough manpower to do the kind of groundwork that private detectives would do. In some special cases, we do take the help of cyber experts who probably are aware of technical issues more than us...
