Joing me and Judy&Jordan, two volunteers that stayed with me in September, when we remove an overgrown ivy from the facade of my house. It took 10 hours, we filled 10 trailer loads. Another volunteer also used up two chain saws when he removed the rest of the stems in October. I shared a reel of when a big chunk of this fell off on Instagram that went VIRAL with 25 million views and thousands of comments. People had a LOT of opinions about the removal and the opinions were divided. Sooo many thought it was a shame and that I had ruined the house and on the other line people thought it was the best thing I could do for the house because ivy is so invasive and destroys houses. Now, I know I have every right to do whatever I want with my house, but I still want to explain a bit here, to avoid some unnecessary comments. 1. I could see signs of distress on the house, for example on the foundation where the ivy was planted. 2. The windows couldn't open up properly and when you tried open it (what was possible), insects would come inside. 3. The ivy was preventing the bricks/mortar/roof to breathe and it kept it moist which can be very damaging. 4. It wasn't possible to just cut it back, it was too old so it wouldn't look nice because the branches were too thick and dense. It would just be a naked carpet of branches left. Either way I wanted to inspect the whole facade to get control of the damage, but it was impossible to see a quarter of the facade through the branches. 5. Ivy isn't native to Sweden, it would be better to plant something more natural to the habitat for the wildlife. Also I have a very big garden, that plant wasn't crucial to the survival of the bees flying around the ivy. Some people also felt sorry for all the insects living in the plants, but I am sorry, they had to go. 6. We wore bee suites because we were afraid there would be wasps or bees nests in the plant, luckily there were none. We waited until the end of September when all of the nectar had been collected from the flowers.
