On October 31st, 1999, Egypt Air Flight 990 is heading out over the Atlantic Ocean to Cairo. Dinner is being served, when suddenly, the plane begins plunging toward the water. Minutes later, the flight turns into a disaster all 217 people on board are dead. Do you know what caused Egypt Air Flight 990 to plunge towards the ocean? From Season 3 Episode 8 "Death and Denial": There was no distress signal, no obvious sign of malfunction. Did a bomb bring the plane down? Is there a mechanical fault with one of the most popular airliners in the world? As pieces of the plane are pulled from the ocean, the mystery deepens. Investigators pore over the wreckage. Tiny rivets in the plane that help control the elevators were broken before the crash. Egypt Air insists this was the cause of the tragedy, but the National Transportation Safety Board pushes further. The investigation drags on into the early months of 2002. After exhausting all possibilities, the NTSB comes out with a startling conclusion. After digging into the past of the crew members, the NTSB says the “probable cause” was a deliberate act. The co-pilot flew the 767 into the ocean on purpose! To this day, officials for Egypt Air dispute the claims of the NTSB. Flight 990 remains one of the most controversial crashes in modern aviation history. As a result, the NTSB is now calling for video recording in the cockpit. Existing cockpit voice recorders tell you what the pilots said – but not what they did. Video recording, they contend, would have shown a picture of the two pilots fighting desperately – one to save the aircraft, the other to commit mass murder.
