Apidya Longplay (Amiga) [50 FPS]

Developed by Kaiko and published by Blue Byte in 1992. Apart from a magazine demo disk, Apidya was a game that I never got to play at the time of it's original release. The game contains an introduction so I won't go into detail here, other than to say you play a wizard who's decided to get revenge on another wizard who's poisoned his wife with a swarm of poisonous insects. The most striking thing about the game is the concept of setting a shoot 'em up in a miniaturised world of insects and their surrounding environments. The opening level sets the scene as you take on flies, worms and a particularly vicious mole in a fight to the death. In some ways it is reminiscent of Bio-Hazard Battle released the same year on the Sega Megadrive (Genesis). The graphics are fantastic and display all the enemy sprites in great detail, especially down to some particularly gory details when they die (the rat corpse in the sewer is detailed and unpleasant in equal measure). Technically, the game is certainly accomplished with some silky-smooth scrolling, parallax scrolling and some fantastic music by Chris Hulsbeck. The game plays quite well too, although it suffers from fairly high difficulty. There can be a lot going on on-screen with enemy bullets, hazards and this is compounded by the fact certain parts of the scenery are impenetrable and will kill you if you touch them. Difficulty aside, Apidya is another classic in the Amiga hall of fame. #retrogaming
