The seam stitch from Herjolfsnes can be hard to decipher, but once you see how, it is easy to sew and makes very strong, tidy seams. I'm referring to the books Woven Into the Earth: Textiles from Norse Greenland by Else Ostergaard and Medieval Garments Reconstructed: Norse Clothing Patterns by Anna Norgard, Else Ostergaard, and Lilli Fransen. 'Seam stitch' is my best attempt at translating the Danish 'sømmesting' for easily intimidated English only speakers like myself.
