Chaitanya Chakrarm the wonder horse from Hyderabad won a nail-biting victory. He was also one of the only winners to make his own running and win from start-to-finish. From the top of the long Mahalaxmi Straight, it became a veritable Match Race, between Chaitanya Chakram on the rails and Capricon on his outside. They battled it out stride for stride and pulled away from the rest. It looked at one stage that Capricon the favourite being ridden by Vasant Shinde had the measure of Chaitanya Chakram. But the gallant and gutsy front runner was not to be denied the victory. He dug down deeper and produced that little extra and in the end he just about held on flashing past the winning post with his neck in front of Capricon. The Chakram story was almost like a fairy tale for his Hyderabad based Owners. They had turned down lucrative offers to sell the colt and had hung on to him firm in their belief that they would win. They had stuck with their jockey Lloyd Marshall whose own credentials could hardly compare to the other jockeys in the field such as Paul Cook, Sandy Barclay, Mick Kinane, Aslam Kader, Vasant Shinde and John Lowe. But faith and courage triumphed over all and Chaitanya Chakram became the first horse from Hyderabad to win the McDowell Indian Derby. Chaitanya Chakram was bred at the Dashmesh Stud and Agricultural Farm and he went on to Bangalore where he once again decisively defeated his adversary Capricorn in the Invitation Cup.
