This film is available to license from our website at Huntley Film Archives, by searching for film 1044375 in our Film # search bar: https://www.huntleyarchives.com/ A 1940s travelogue film of Greece in the 1940s. The film shows different aspects of Greek rural and city life. The film shows fishermen, farmers, goat herders, dockworkers and women spinning yarn and cooking. The film shows life on the island of Kephallenia (also known as Cephalonia or Kefalonia) and the Corinth Canal as well as the city of Athens, with the Acropolis and Parthenon shown in detail. An old Greek captain pilots a sailing boat across the sea near the coast of Greece. The film transitions into a picturesque seaside village built on the steep hillside of a Greek island. Several small boats and ships float in the harbour. A woman leads two goats along a hill overlooking a small town. In the mountains other herds of goats roam about on the rocks and graze on the plants that grow in the cracks. In a vineyard groups of women carry baskets of grapes on their shoulders. Others pick more grapes from the vines. They bring the baskets to a man who inspects bunches of the fruit. The grapes are then laid out on the ground to dry in the sun. In a lemon grove workers on ladders pick ripe fruit and put them into bags they carry. They dump the bags of fruit into a central basket. In a field farmers use sickles to harvest wheat. A convoy of heavily laden horse drawn carts transports the crops along a country road. A map of Greece is shown with both the Aegean and Ionian Seas highlighted as well as the rocky terrain of the country. The Island of Kephallenia (also known as Cephalonia or Kefalonia) is highlighted and the film changes to show the island. A sailing boat moves across the Ionian Sea passing the island as the sun shines down. Sailors adjust the rigging of the ship and lower the sails. The captain of the boat steers it towards the shore. In the harbour of a seaside town a ship has cargo unloaded from it by stevedores. They pile up sacks of goods on the dockside and in a nearby storage warehouse. In the mountains there is a small and remote village. People lead donkeys or mules along the streets of the village. In a courtyard men and women use spindle sticks or spindle whorls to spin yarn. In a workshop a cobbler works on a shoe, nearby a young boy, possibly an apprentice, uses a hammer to put pins into the sole of a shoe. Two men and a boy lead a mule out into the countryside past a small shrine. The men use hoes to dig up the ground of a field near some olive trees. The men and the boy continue to till the soil using the hoes. Nearby one of the men strips a branch of leaves or possibly olives. In a kitchen a woman uses a funnel to fill a glass bottle with olive oil. The woman takes the oil to an iron cooking pot over a fire and pours a little of the oil into the stew pot. Outside the rural house three children play some kind of dice game on the ground. The men return from the fields to the village and they arrive back at the house as the woman pulls a bucket of water from the well. The men and boy return the donkeys saddle and the tools to a nearby shed. They fill a wooden bucket with grain. In the house the family sits together at the table and they eat their dinner. The simple meal is of stew and bread. In the barn the mule eats straw and a chicken wanders around before being kicked lightly by the donkey. Two boys approach an old man with a thick white beard as he stands looking at two large windmills. They have a conversation with each other. On another country road people lead a group of pack mules along by ropes. In the harbour of a seaside town workers load wooden barrels into the hold of a ship. The map of Greece returns highlighting the capital city of Athens and the nearby port of Piraeus. A dotted line appears to show the sea route between Kefalonia and Piraeus through the Corinth Canal which cuts through the Isthmus of Corinth. The film then changes to show a variety of small boats travelling through this long stone channel carved through the rock. On one of the small boats a group of men and boys haul in fishing nets teaming with fish. A sailing boat arrives at a busy city port with many sailing ships moored up and smaller boats on the water... Huntley Film Archives is a film library holding tens of thousands of films. The large majority of the films are documentaries. Films cover a wide range of subjects and production dates range from the 1890’s to the 2020’s. As with all libraries we make no judgement on the content of our holdings and make them available for educational purposes for all to see. Films may have content or express opinions some may think inappropriate or offensive, but it is not the work of a library to censor educational resources. Films should be viewed with historical objectivity and within a context relevant to the times in which they were produced
