Chess Openings: Learn to Play the English Defense! Would you like to play the Owen's Defense against d4? If you answer is yes, the English Defense might be fore you! Some of you are probably wondering how we could play the Owen's Defense against d4, because the Owen's Defense is a response against e4. Here is how the English Defense begins: 1. d4 b6 Most players don't want to play b6 with the English Defense, because it gives white the opportunity to take full control of the center. However, as an Owen's Defense player, that is exactly what we want! The Owen's Defense has good chess opening strategy, chess opening moves, chess opening ideas, chess opening theory, chess opening tricks, chess opening traps, and chess opening principles. By playing b6 with the English Defense, we give white the opportunity to transpose into the Owen's Defense, but what if they don't? We will continue with 2. ...e6 and give white another opportunity to take control of the center! If they do this time, there are some chess opening traps for black that can help you win games fast. However, if they continue with a move like Nf3 or Nc3, we can transpose into either the Nimzo-Indian Defense or Queen's Indian Defense. Both of which are top tier chess openings for black against the move d4. In both the Queen's Indian Defense and Nimzo-Indian Defense, we will eventually play b6 looking to fianchetto the bishop. However, with the English Defense, we simply play this move a little bit earlier and allow a potential Owen's Defense game to happen. The big advantage there is that you would be playing against a d4 player, but in an e4 opening. By doing this, you are taking them out of their chess opening theory and you'll probably be much more comfortable with the opening lines and variations than they are. The English Defense, similar to the Dunst Opening, is a good transitional opening. It can bring you into the Owen's Defense, Nimzo-Indian Defense, or Queen's Indian Defense. All of these chess openings are good for beginner chess players and intermediate chess players. Why? First off, they put chess opening strategy at the forefront of every move, line, and variation. Additionally, it will teach you key principles and themes that can help you navigate openings and middlegames, really helping you learn how to play good chess. More than that, the English Defense is a great way to take your d4 opponent's by surprise an help you win more games. We hope you enjoy this video covering the English Defense against d4!
