By making use of small scale shapes we can get through the chord changes to Satin Doll, or any other tune, by just expressing the harmony through scales. I'll show you guys the best and most efficient way to learn how to practice scales over jazz standards! Then, we'll dig into a really interesting chromatic scale concept developed by Barry Harris. I think this way of playing a chromatic scale, or adding chromatic notes to our major scales, is absolutely genius! It's much more musical and useful than the traditional "bebop scale" methods you might be familiar with. We'll learn how the concept works and then learn all five major scale shapes we'll need to use it on Satin Doll. Finally, I'll take you guys through an etude I wrote using tons of chromatic notes and some pivot arpeggios that I taught back in Guitar Fundamentals ep. 3. This way, we can hear how to use the chromatic concept in order to play lines that move across chords and resolve properly instead of just playing from one chord to the next.
