Sunderland played host to an upbeat Middlesbrough for round six of the EFL Championship. Middlesbrough were looking for their 6th win in seven at the Stadium of Light. Sunderland though were determined to show that last weeks' surprise loss to Plymouth was an aberration and had the chance to take five wins in their first six games for the first time in their history at this level. Carrick had set Boro up to counter with pace against Sunderland's high press, but he hadn't done his homework well enough to realise Le Bris has his team very well drilled about when and when not to press. When Sunderland proves more than one dimensional in their approach, Middlesbrough looked ill at ease and unsure. Sunderland's solid defence denied Boro their usual play style through the centre and they subsequently struggled to set up the number of quality chances they normally do. Sunderland then used their share of possession with lethal potency, scoring one, claiming two pelanties and hitting the woodwork. Although the game looked finely balanced in by half time the second half saw Sunderland assume relatively complete control over proceedings, and there was to be no error in the result this week.
