On July 15, 2001, MSNBC - the cable news channel launched as a cooperative venture between NBC News and Microsoft - celebrated its fifth anniversary. This was a presentation tape used within the companies, shown at official events and to advertisers - even airing once on MSNBC itself. It's an interesting take on the big news events the channel covered in its first five years, looking back from the summer of 2001. It highlights the original intent of MSNBC, mostly forgotten today: to combine the power of a legacy network TV news organization with the computing powerhouse of Microsoft. Both companies were eager to become the destination for news content both onscreen (on cable TV) and online (at msnbc.com). Of course, one of the biggest news events in American history would happen less than two months after this tape was completed - the September 11 attacks at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. So it's also interesting to grasp what were considered the big American headlines, innovations and crises immediately previous to that world-changing day. Microsoft sold its stake in MSNBC in 2005, and its stake in msnbc.com in 2012.
