Framlingham Walk: Town Centre & Castle (on the Hill)【4K】

Located in the county of Suffolk, and around 15 miles northeast of Ipswich, is the town of Framlingham. Geographically, Framlingham is situated adjacent to a small lake called The Mere, which feeds into the River Ore, a tributary of the River Alde. A castle has stood here since sometime around the Norman era. The castle that stands today dates from around circa 1190, following the slighting of its predecessor by Henry II in the aftermath of the Revolt of 1173-1174. Its construction was ordered by Roger Bigod, 2nd Earl of Norfolk, and has the unusual characteristic of having no central keep, but utilising a curtain wall with thirteen mural towers. In 1285, during the reign of Edward I, a market charter was granted to Framlingham. To this day a twice-weekly market is held on Market Hill, which is also home to a wide range of independent shops. Just over the road from here is the Church of St Michael. This dates all the way back to the 12th century, although most of the extant building dates from the 14th to 16th centuries. The church is Grade I listed. In 1553 Mary Tudor came to Framlingham Castle along with an entourage of around 13,000 supporters following the death of her half-brother Edward VI. Edward had named his cousin and fellow protestant Lady Jane Grey as heir, but her de-facto rule lasted for just nine days. It was from behind the castle walls that Mary learned that she was to be crowned Queen of England. In 1859 a railway station opened in Framlingham. This was the northern terminus of the Framlingham Branch - a line which connected the town to Wickham Market station on the East Suffolk Line running between Ipswich and Lowestoft. Framlingham station, along with its branch line, closed to passengers in 1952, and to goods in 1965. Today, public transport to Framlingham consists of direct bus services from Ipswich (N.B. only about half-a-dozen per day, Monday to Saturday only!), and a special minivan service from Wickham Market railway station. This works like a bus/taxi hybrid whereby you book a timeslot with an app and they will arrange to pick you up accordingly. At the time of filming this, the journey costs £3.95 per leg. This public school was built in the Gothic Revival style, and is situated just opposite the castle (seen a few seconds after the 20-minute mark). Famous people from Framlingham include Ed Sheeran (albeit born in Halifax). In 2017 Sheeran released the song Castle on the Hill, which refers specifically to Framlingham Castle along with memories of growing up in the surrounding area. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
