Sexual Harassment in Public Transportation: A Comparative Study between Urban Japan and the Philippines | Shannen Liz Carreon ABSTRACT The issue of women’s safety in public transportation is not only a gendered issue because it is tied into larger structures— legal, historical, social, cultural, and religious— that contribute to the widespread prevalence of sexual harassment in public transportation experience. Japan and the Philippines, both Asian countries, the former considered as developed and the latter as developing, faces a huge gap in gender parity. This shows that women in the Philippines are not at a disadvantage when compared to Japan because it has more laws protecting women from sexual harassment in public spaces. However, both countries should include feminist perspective in reassessing and restructuring public transportation planning. About the Competition The research competition aims to encourage Japan-related research among Filipino students, to disseminate knowledge, and exchange perspectives on Japanese Studies. It is organized by the UP Asian Center and the Japan Foundation, Manila.
