Indonesia Australia Red Meat Cattle Partnership: Commercial Cattle Breeding Batch 3

Indonesia Australia Red Meat and Cattle Partnership held the 3rd Batch of the Commercial Cattle Breeding training program dedicated to those who involve in cattle breeding operations (breedlot, SISKA operation, smallholder farmers). The program was held in collaboration with Gadjah Mada University Yogyakarta on 1 -12 April 2019 in Indonesia and 21-30 April in Australia. aside from in class activities such as workshops and discussions, the important aspect of this training program is the site visit component where participants could obtain lesson learned and best practices of different types cattle production system. The visit includes visiting palm oil-cattle integration system in PT Agro Menara Rachmet, astra group and PT. Kalteng Andinipalma Lestari, Medco group in central Kalimantan, an intensive cattle production system of PT. Santori Probolinggo in east java and a smallholders farmer partnership system established by PT. Widodo Makmur Perkasa in central java. In Australia, participants had an opportunity to benchmark different types of cattle breeding stations. Jim and Sarah vineyard in Gympie set an example of good diversification of cattle production where the profit of the industry is not solely from cattle but from other products such as hay and grass seeds. Brian Pastures research facilities which is owned by industry but operated by government, is a good showcase of an effective collaboration between government and industry to improve cattle sector through research and development activities. Here, participants learned mainly about good pasture management as well as effective herd management. In Kaimkillenbun,a small town in the Western Downs Region, Queensland, participants learned how good management and supporting facilities could result in top quality breeds of angus bulls
