7 THINGS THAT ARE NORMAL TO DANES BUT WOULD HORRIFY AMERICANS: The Weird Parts of Living in Denmark #Denmark #Danmark #DanishCulture This video talks about some fun things we have noticed as American expats living in Copenhagen. We take a deep dive into the things that are normal to Danes but would horrify Americans. Many things are normal in Denmark but weird in America, and they’re listed below and explained in much more detail in our video. One thing that’s often shared about how crazy Denmark is compared to America is the fact that Danes leave their babies outside, even in the winter - it’s just part of Danish culture. Danes, quite reasonably, say that there is no sense waking a kid that is sleeping and their baby buggies are much too big for small boutiques. We have heard claims that leaving the baby outside is good for them! That the fresh air helps to improve their breathing? It my be cliche to hear, but Danes and Europeans are so much more comfortable with sex and nudity than Americans. On TV, in radio shows and all over advertisements, sex and nudity is something that’s a part of life in Denmark that would shock American people. Danes are much more comfort with sex, it’s just treated as something that isn't taboo. Swearing is very commonplace in Danish society but is considered taboo in American culture. People in Denmark curse a lot, and it would shock many Americans to hear it so often. In fact, some foreigners may even consider it rude to hear harsh curse words in the office. We discuss it more in our video, 9 Things Danes Say to Foreigners That Sound Rude (but are totally harmless). You can watch it HERE via ‪@RobeTrotting‬    • 9 THINGS DANES SAY TO FOREIGNERS THAT...   Danish humor is definitely something that is totally normal in Denmark but would be weird and misunderstood in America. Danes are known for their humor to be sarcastic and sometimes ironic, they enjoy joking around at their own expense and the expense of others. Danish humor seems to be designed to keep people in line and also to make them a little bit uncomfortable. It’s a bit different than American humor which is more wordplay, puns, cutesy and designed not to offend. One thing about Denmark that would be surprising to Americans is the comfort with divorce and single parenthood. Marriage is nice, but not considered as sacred and moral as it is in the United States. Even though the divorce rate is similar to the American divorce rate, divorce in Denmark is just considered part of life and not stigmatized. One thing that’s normal in Denmark that would be horrifying in America is how much freedom and trust kids have. This is in small things like taking public transportation to visit a friend or their education system across the country emphasizing school skills at an early age. There is no American helicopter parent mentality when raising children in Denmark. Learn more in this video from ‪@TravelinYoung‬ and their video dedicated to the topic:    • Top 5 Adjustments as American Parents...   Public Intoxication and drinking culture in Denmark is very different from drinking culture in the United States. Social acceptability, teen drinking in Denmark, and morality in America all cause a very different situation around drinking. It’s definitely a major thing that is normal in Denmark but would be horrifying in America.
