Join kindergarten teacher Ben Cogswell as he shares how to keep our youngest learners engaged in distance learning by blending digital tools with analog activities. Costumes, puppets, and sound effects keep things fun! Hands-on drawing and writing tasks keep them active while learning together. Showcasing and highlighting student work motivates kids to participate and share. All of it adds up to a virtual classroom that engages your littlest learners and keeps them coming back. As schools across the country remain closed due to the coronavirus, we're all doing our best to navigate teaching and learning from home. But let's be honest: It's not easy! In this twice-weekly video series from Common Sense, we sit down for short discussions with educators from all over the country to learn how they're coping with school closures, putting together distance-learning plans, and addressing some of the challenges that come with teaching remotely. Recorded on 4/21/2020. SPEAKERS Ben Cogswell (@cogswell_ben) Kindergarten teacher and former edtech coach for Alisal Union School District, California Sue Thotz (@SueThotz) Senior program manager, Common Sense Education QUICK TAKEAWAYS AND RESOURCES Presentation slides: https://docs.google.com/presentation/... Keeping students engaged: Be fun! -- Puppets, hats, and props are your friend. -- Don't underestimate the power of a simple sound effects toy. -- Make a simple green screen and use a background image. Even when distance teaching online, get kids off the screen and have them physically writing, drawing, and sketch-noting. -- Use a document camera or your own phone to demonstrate. -- Ben uses www.ipevo.com/ and https://okiolabs.com/. You can also search how to use your phone as a document camera. Your virtual classroom can sound like your in-person classroom. -- Use a simple bell as a cue to get kids in sync. -- Don't overuse the mute-all button. Muting does not equate to students listening. -- Valid reasons to mute students: background noise, student volume interfering with learning, students being unable to mute themselves. Highlight student work for students and families to see. -- Ben uses Seesaw for students and Facebook for families: www.facebook.com/kindrockets. -- He showcases student work and highlights "Star Students" every week: www.kindrockets.org. -- Use one site for students to go to, and embed everything there. Life as a teacher and parent of four. -- Have a schedule and system of communication that honors everyone. -- Ben uses a pocket chart to organize and a disco light to signal he's live. -- Get outside every day.
