Alumni Echoes #1: Halide Double Perovskite: A New Approach for Lead-Free Optoelectronics

This is the first talk in the series "Alumni Echoes", hosted by 137 Inverse. The details of the talk are as follows: Speaker: Mr. Debapratim Pal, an alumnus of the Department of Physical Sciences from the BS-MS 2019 batch. Title: Halide Double Perovskite: A New Approach for Lead-Free Optoelectronics. Abstract: The metal halide perovskite materials have drawn the world's attention due to their intriguing properties for the last few decades. The exciting optical, electronic, and morphology control properties of the metal halide perovskite materials have made them feasible for optoelectronic device applications. These properties have made the halide perovskites a potential alternative for the conventional semiconductor. Recent research works have achieved high efficiency in solar cells, LEDs, sensors, photoconductors, and electrochemical applications by using halide perovskite materials. Though these materials show very promising results, the toxicity and instability of halide perovskite materials inhibit its large-scale production. The lead-containing halide perovskite materials cause severe diseases and pollute the environment. These issues have made researchers rethink the alternative lead-free, non-toxic, stable perovskite materials. The halide double perovskite materials have gained attention due to their similar characteristics to lead halide perovskites. The fascinating optical and morphological properties of halide double perovskites have made the scientific community explore these materials as a potential solution against the toxicity of lead halide perovskites.
