How do things burn? | Live Experiments (Ep 9) | Head Squeeze

Science communicator Fran Scott shows us a few unique methods of burning things. IMPORTANT: You will need one sober adult with a sense of scientific wonder as this experiment will involve burning things, and we don't want anyone getting hurt.   What you need to get started is: A fire steel, flint, a sheet of A4 Paper, 2 large big steel balls or 2 small rocks if you don't have steel balls, a washing line, pegs, flash cotton, flash paper, a lighter, protective glasses and fire retardant gloves.   Below you will find 4 mini experiments. It's important that you wear protective gloves and glasses if you try these out for yourself.     EXPERIMENT 1: 1. Turn off/dim any lights you may have in your room 2. Now strike you piece of flint against your fire steel and watch the sparks fly   EXPERIMENT 2: 1. Peg one sheet of A4 paper on to a washing line. 2. Now get your 2 large steel balls or rocks and hold them apart at either side of the A4 paper 3. Now swing your steel balls or rocks inwards towards the paper, so that they clash 4. This should create a build up of friction to burn a hole in your piece of paper    EXPERIMENT 3:      1. Put on your pair of fire retardant gloves      2. Place a small piece of flash cotton on your hand      3. Now you can ignite the cotton using your lighter      4. You will notice that the flash cotton will literally 'vanish into thin air!'   EXPERIMENT 4:      1. Peg one sheet of A4 flash paper on to a washing line.      2. Now get your 2 large steel balls or rocks and hold them apart at either side of the A4 paper.      3. Now swing your steel balls or rocks inwards towards the paper so that they clash      4. This should create a build up of friction to burn a large burn hole in your piece of paper, and also create a crackling noise.
