Scared to death about dying? In this national radio interview from December 2011, compassion expert Dr. Shane Sinclair, discusses his doctoral research on the impact of death and dying on healthcare providers working at the end of life. From these humble beginnings over a decade ago, emerged the Compassion Research Lab—an internationally recognized research centre on the art and science of compassion. In this conversation amongst mortals we learn that, contrary to popular opinion, healthcare providers working at the end of life—who frequent the landscape of death and dying more than any other group in society—were not left feeling more depressed, morbid, and burnout as a result of their work. Rather, they felt that working at the end of life was primarily a positive experience that taught them many invaluable life lessons that they could incorporate into their personal lives. These included: an enhanced sense of meaning in life, a greater ability to transcend suffering, a deeper desire to live more fully in the present, and the cultivation of a spiritual life. While we may wish to avoid death at all costs, death is unfortunately an inevitable outcome of being human. In recognizing our impermanence, we may not only learn how to transcend suffering, but we may enhance our life in the process.
