Cataract & Strabismus Surgery: Hope in Sight for Moldovan Children Born Blind

Cataract Surgeries for the Children Born Blind: In 1998, a team of ophthalmologist surgeons from Portland, Oregon, traveled to Moldova on a special mission to give sight to children born blind. Their patients were young children and infants who were born with cataracts and patients with severe cases of strabismus. While at the Moldovan hospital these members of the Casey Eye Institute of OHSU also trained Moldovan surgeons on the latest surgical techniques, like Lasik eye surgery and surgical technologies that were not available to them prior to Soviet rule. During this 10 day strabismus and cataract surgery mission, the team worked up to 14 hours a day to complete as many eye surgeries as possible. They provided their services free of charge knowing their patients could never afford such a procedure. In all, 42 patients were treated. Children who were born blind were suddenly open to a world of sight.
