Free: A Child and a Country at the End of History – a discussion with Lea Ypi

Lea Ypi’s memoir Free: A Child and a Country at the End of History (Penguin) has been praised by reviewers and short-listed for book prizes. Free vividly recreates what it was like to grow up amid Albania’s transition from ‘really existing socialism’ to Western-style market socialism. Reviewers have tended to skate past the fact that the author is a political philosopher who, more or less simultaneously with Free, published a rigorously scholarly study of Kant, The Architectonic of Reason (Oxford University Press), and even more so that she is a Marxist. Lea was also the co-convener of our Seminar in Contemporary Marxist Theory. One can see Free as a meditation of the different meanings of freedom in the light of the experience of societies like Albania. In this seminar Lea will talk about Free and its relationship to her political and theoretical commitments. Lea Ypi is Professor in Political Theory in the Government Department, London School of Economics.
