SEPTA Route 36 Trolley Elmwood & Island Avenue

SEPTA trolley action at Elmwood & Island Avenues. Very busy intersection in Southwest Philadelphia around SEPTA's Elmwood Depot. WARNING: This is very dangerous intersection. There is a lot of traffic coming from every direction including trolleys, be careful! The curbs are very low and cars can run a bit close to the sidewalk when making turns. A pedestrian was killed the night before this video was recorded. You can see a temporary cardboard memorial in some of the shots. Stay safe! The Route 36 has a stop at Elmwood & Island but you can see trolleys from routes 11, 13, 34 & 36 entering and exiting the depot as well. It’s a great place to watch the iconic SEPTA Kawasaki Type K Light Rail Vehicles in action. You can also see the line up of PCC II's waiting to to become PCC III's at the depot in the background. These cars are being restored at the Woodland Shop and will return to service on the Route 15 in the near future. Westbound trolleys to trundle up Elmwood Avenue from Center City to make a left at the busy intersection on to Island Avenue heading towards the loop at 80th & Eastwick. Trolleys on the 36 return to Center City Philadelphia by making a left turn from Island on to Elmwood Avenue. The Route 36 is currently the longest SEPTA Subway/Surface trolley route. In the past that distinction was held by the Route 23, which is now served by bus.
