CMMC requires protection for, both, CUI and FCI, and succinctly defines FCI as information provided by or generated for the Government (DoD) under contract that has is not publicly released. FAR 52.204-21 ("Basic Safeguarding of Covered Contractor Information Systems") specifically defines FCI this way: "facts, data, or opinions... provided by or generated for the Government under a contract... [that's] not provided to the public". Also, CMMC associates Level 1 maturity - along with all practices and processes required - to the protection of FCI. This primer video explains some of the nuances of FCI, how DoD contractors in the DIB need to protect the data, and what contractual requirements to consider.
