BMK's 89th Jayanti - Sarvani Sangeetha Sabha, Chennai - Dr. Pantula Rama (07.07.2019)

Sarvani Sangeetha Sabha, Chennai, had organised a two-day musical programme as a tribute to Dr. Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna (BMK) on his 89th jayanti, on July 6 and 7, 2019. I had the opportunity to participate in this programme. In addition, I had on behalf of the Muraligānam fraternity and my team, the honour of receiving an adulation from the Sabha. It was in appreciation of our music for posterity restoration projects, and our humble endeavour to curate, restore and share heritage music recordings. Presented here is a video from the day 2 (July 7,2019) of the programme, featuring a moving introduction, some ramblings on music restoration, and a music concert echoing the quintessential perspective of Muraligānam. In the first part, Dr. G Lalitha, Assistant Director (Programme) at the Chennai All India Radio (AIR), speaks about BMK and his special bond with AIR with some unheard of and alluring anecdotes about the maestro. In the second part, the honour received from the Sabha and an opportunity to share some nuances about audio remastering could be witnessed. The “pièce de résistance” is the third part of this video, in which Dr. Pantula Ramā and her complementing team pay a well thought out tribute, a vocal concert, to Muraligānam. As I sat back and engaged myself in listening to her wholesome presentation, what I admired the most is the exercise of wisdom-of-choice to present and portray BMK as an accomplished Vaggéyakāra; as a poet who weaved a fine fabric with syllables and notes as its interlacing threads; as a meritorious tunesmith; as a musician with an unquenchable quest for unearthing unheard compositions, and more so as a creative genius of scholarship in creating new rāgas and a tāla system. Thus, a comprehensive portrait of Muraligānam emerged vividly with these features in Dr. Ramā’s concert and all these presented in just under 100 minutes. Dr. Pantula Ramā’s effort was seamlessly supported by Sri. M S N Murthy (Violin) and Sri. N C Bharadwaj (Mridangam), a disciple of Sri. U K Sivaraman. As the concert continued with the renditions of several compositions of BMK besides the compositions in 3 and 4 notes rāgas and a scintillating RTP, my mind went into a contemplative mode as the flashes of new sangatīs of improvisation emerged from the seat of Manódharma, portraying some fresh ideas and new possibilities. I recalled, sitting there, an interview of BMK in which he spoke about sangatīs. He had said, “When I was teaching a line of pallavi of one of my compositions to a student, the disciple repeated it with a variation, deviating from what had been taught. I paused for a while to behold what had been sung and was delighted to observe the improvisation that had emerged at that moment. I had also witnessed the role of an open mind and its contribution in developing creative improvisation.” He continued, “I observed how my composition was bedecked with another beautiful facet” and added, “sangatīs happen!” with a smile. The above interview kept coming back to me as I continued to listen to Dr. Ramā and her team. The grace of Manódharma in her music, faithfully anchored to the framework of Vaggéyakāra and dextrously explored to bring out new dimensions and possibilities, helped in portraying an assurance for the perennial flow of Muraligānam. I was envisioning a smiling BMK, sitting in the front row and listening to his own creations and witness how they blossomed and cascaded to leave an impression on the sands of time. As the concert concluded with a “brand BMK Mangalam”, I was enveloped with gratefulness for the opportunity to participate and savour a fulfilling concert of Muraligānam. I am immensely grateful to Sri. Srivilas, Sarvani Sangeetha Sabha for facilitating this video upload and I truly appreciate his spirit of sharing. I am also profoundly grateful to Sri. Garimella Subrahmanyam for championing the two-day music festival as a reverential tribute to BMK.
