GEDLING PARISH #3: LAMBLEY Welcome back to Gedling everyone, and to a rainy Lambley, situated about seven miles away from the centre of Nottingham. This village lies in a valley – in fact, there are several valleys here if truth be known, which were formed by glacial meltwater. The locals know them as Dumbles, and they’re a major tourist attraction. The Dumbles are secluded places, noted not only for their geology but for their rich flowers and ferns, including the humble cowslip – a Lambley emblem. The name Lambley literally means "lamb's meadow". It was recorded in the Domesday book as having 20 villagers – quite a reasonable size for a village at that time. It was a well established agricultural community, and for centuries that has remained the case. Modern businesses have sprung up these days too, including three very successful pubs - the Woodlark Inn, the Robin Hood Inn and The Lambley, all of which looked pretty inviting in this rain! Perhaps its most unusual business would be what occupies its former post office – we’ll get to that in due course. It also has a school, a village hall, a church and plenty of other pretty landmarks. To the West of the village but still within its boundaries is Gedling Crematorium, and is there where we’ll encounter one of the most wonderfully heartwarming inventions we’ve ever seen. And we’ll even get to meet the 10 year old local girl who came up with the idea.
