They stun or kill mackerel with their swords and then come back around to finish off the fish. If you watch this video, you will see these incredible fish maneuver, stab, spear, and then come back around and swallow the fish. My body pumped with adrenalin as my heart raced from using my fins frantically moving and freediving to keep up as they breached all around us. As dangerous as they seem, I felt they had complete control. Their bodies propel out of the water when they come from below to feed on these silvery fish. Highly evolved, striped marlin are superfish. Designed for speed and power, their bones have special adaptations. Most people on our planet associate billfish and marlin with game fishing, often to compete and catch these charismatic fish as a trophy species. They are at risk of overfishing because of unsustainable fishing practices in the Pacific. After just one swim with these animals, I have joined the movement to #SaveTheMarlins and increase ecotourism in the region. Marlins are wroth more alive in the water than dead on a plate or as a prize.
