Korean Wetlands: Vital Links in the Chain Recognizing the Connection Celebrating the Connection Conserving the Connection Standing tall alongside internationally important concentrations of geese and duck, White-naped Cranes spend the winter at Junam Reservoir in Changwon City. In spring, they begin their long migration northward back to their breeding grounds in Russia and China, joined by birds that spent their winter in Japan. Again flying northward, these birds will soon reach the DMZ. There they will join massive flocks of geese and families of Red-crowned Cranes: a globally Endangered species, and a living symbol of long-life and well-being. For all of these migratory bird species the wetlands and diverse habitats of the DMZ are not a barrier, but a bridge over which they travel. Here, all can find a place to feed and rest: an undisturbed sanctuary. To them, the DMZ is another vital link in the chain of Korean wetlands; a narrow bridge over which they pass on their long migrations along the EAAF.
