What is cetane rating? When purchasing gasoline or diesel fuel you’ve likely noticed the selection of numbers available to purchase, whether it’s 87, 91, 98, etc. The numbers shown are the octane rating for gasoline, or the cetane rating for diesel fuel, and these numbers indicated properties about the fuel you’re buying. The octane rating tells you how resistant a fuel is to knock; another way of thinking about this is how much can you compress that fuel, mixed with air, before it ignites from the heat and pressure. A Cetane rating is the ignition delay of a diesel fuel. Both scales originally were designed from 0 to 100, though Octane ratings above 100 are certainly possible. The scales get their names from the hydrocarbons Octane and Cetane, both of which represent a rating of 100 on their respective scales. The video brakes down both of these concepts in detail, and how a low or high rating affects performance and efficiency characteristics of an engine.
