It can be tempting to expect every project or feature to fit nicely into a bottoms up project plan. But it's foolish to think you will be able to estimate a project that you haven't gotten working end to end before. There is too much research needed and it's not a mater of sitting down and cranking out code. The solution is to just build a prototype with the explicit goal of learning as much as you can.
