Sarcoptic Mange Scabies in the dog. Dr. Dan explains.

*This video is for entertainment and educational purposes only. If your pet is sick, take them to see your local veterinarian for the care they need* (Disclaimer) Hi everyone! My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian. Today I am talking about sarcoptic mange also known as scabies. Sarcoptic mange is one of the most itchiest diseases seen in dogs. The mange will dig deep into the dog's skin an cause severely itchy skin. The dog's fur will usually fall out where the mange is present. A veterinarian will diagnose sarcoptic mange or scabies with a skin scrape. As a veterinarian I will scrape the skin to get a collection of skin cells, fur and mites! The vet will look at the skin scrape sample under the microscope. If there are mites present, we have our diagnosis. A veterinarian will treat mange in many different ways. If the dog is really itchy they may prescribe a steroid to help with the itchy skin. If there is secondary bacterial infection, they may give an antibiotic. To treat the mange, a veterinarian will treat with either a topical, injection, or oral treatment for the mange. It can take weeks or more than a month for the sarcoptic mange to resolve. Is a dog gets treatment, the itchy skin will become less intense.
