JobSeeker needs to keep people 'above the poverty line'

Australian Council of Social Service CEO Dr Cassandra Goldie says the coronavirus crisis has been “devastating for so many people”, which could be worsened due to the economic impact of the pandemic and growing unemployment. The government has received criticism for overspending and poorly managing the JobKeeper and JobSeeker schemes. “We all need to come together now to focus on how do we appropriately, responsibly create, open up more job opportunities and make sure we learn our lessons from the past about avoiding a long tail of unemployment,” Ms Goldie told Sky News. “Our concern is that the JobSeeker payment needs to be adequate to protect people from poverty and the poverty line for a single person is $500 per week,” she said. “We absolutely backed the very important decision the government made to double that JobSeeker payment and we know what’s happening with that money is people are spending it because they desperately needed the income support relief. “That’s also really good for the economy that we do have that money circulating in the real economy, helping to keep some demand there.” Image: Getty
