Health Care Strategies for Firearm Injury Prevention

Hosted by AMA’s Firearm Injury Prevention Task Force Injuries and deaths from firearms are a public health crisis. In 2020, firearm injuries became the leading cause of death in children and adolescents in the United States. While this is a topic that physicians should openly discuss with patients, physicians may find counseling patients about firearm injury prevention difficult. Furthermore, options for intervening when patients are found to be at risk of self-harm or harm to others may vary based on state law. In this recorded session, we explore the epidemiology of firearm morbidity and mortality, discuss factors that increase the potential for firearm injury and death, and learn about evidence-based interventions.
