Floating Licenses - LicenseSpring

Learn more at https://licensespring.com Floating Software Licensing; Concurrent Software Licensing Use LicenseSpring to manage concurrent usage of your software For your End-Users. This Video will cover how to configure and use floating Licenses in your application through LicenseSpring's Software Licensing service. What are Floating Licenses? Floating Licenses, also called concurrent licensing, is a mechanism that controls a number of simultaneous uses of your software. This could be a limited number of end-users that are allowed to run your application at the same time, or a fixed number of instances such as a number of docker containers that are allowed to run concurrently, for example. Why use Floating Licenses? There are several reasons that a Software Vendor might offer floating licenses. Sometimes, an account would seek to save costs compared to end user license models, whereby all of their staff might be allowed to install a vendor’s application, but only a limited number of them can run the app at the same time. This is common for database access, and many B2B cloud services. In some cases, it is not practical to implement other license enforcement mechanisms such as node-locking. Virtualization and containerization will typically create the same hardware profile, so a software-based node-locking approach is not typically viable. Furthermore, virtual machines are often created and destroyed quickly, so node-locking is often not even desirable in these scenarios. - We support offline Activation: A software vendor can install our License Server and activate it on the premises of their customers, without access to the internet. - You can set different ‘heartbeat’ intervals for every license that you issue: The client is automatically deregistered from the license pool if they don’t ping the server prior to the registration timeout. This timeout is configured in minutes at the individual license level. Client registrations can also deregister at any time, freeing up their slot for someone else to use. - Consumption pooling: you can configure licenses to share allowances when metering the usage of a license. Consumption pooling compatible with our floating cloud license model - License Borrowing: You can permit registrations to “check out” a license for longer than the license default timeout period. This can be useful if an end user needs to check out a license for a long period and won’t have a stable connection with the license server. LicenseSpring provides two systems that control concurrency: - Floating Cloud is where the client machines connect over the internet via the LicenseSpring API to register and deregister from the license pool. - Our Floating License Server: is intended to be installed on customer premises, such as on private networks, where the application is run on machines that do not have access to the internet. Our Floating License Server can be deployed in many ways, such as a native binary, via Docker Compose, or through Kubernetes using a straightforward helm chart.
