According to a CNN report on Dec. 24, space scientists have great news to report -- with a certain degree of confidence -- that the asteroid to miss Earth takes it likely even farther away from the planet. NASA has been following the asteroid for some time now. Up to Friday's announcement, the chances of a direct impact was less than one percent. While those are refreshing odds, anything more than zero percent is too close for comfort. Enter a team of astronomers from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and the asteroid is set to miss Earth in or around 2040, based on new evidence. "An analysis of the new data conducted by NASA's Near-Earth Object Program Office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, shows that the risk of collision in 2040 has been eliminated," NASA announced.
