This is the unbelievable true story of how I met Malcolm Gladwell

It was July 20-something the summer of 2019 and I was walking down the steps of Treasure Island beach in Laguna on a beautiful day in Southern California with my family in tow. I had no idea that a crack in my window of opportunity to meet Malcolm was about to happen as I unknowingly trotted down to the golden brown sands of that little piece of paradise unknown to most of the world. My shirt was off in anticipation of the cool waters ahead and I could almost feel the splashes and residue of spray from crashing waves already in my sites. I had a kid on my shoulders with one hand and the other carrying a beach chair and other accoutrements. Just then, out of nowhere and sprinting up the opposite way on the stairs comes the unmistakable Gladwell. That signature hair...a determined look on his face as if he was headed somewhere with purpose. Dressed in running attire he was in high gear. We made eye contact for a second or two but it felt like slow-mo in a scene from a movie as he whizzed by me. I was like a deer in the headlights and I'm sure my jaw was on the floor. The main reason for this shock was that I had actually been pursuing Malcolm, a bucket list guest for me, to come on my Behind the Brand podcast for no less than 6 years. At last the man was inches from me and I froze. After only a few seconds I came out of my stupor and I told my wife and kids what just happened. They all shouted at me to "GO GET HIM!" I dropped everything and ran up the stairs, following the sounds of his footsteps, my mouth beginning to fill up with the bitter dust of possible failure to catch him. As I reached the top of the trail where I began so nonchalantly ready for relaxing and fun, I was tense and beginning to feel the sting of regret. He had vanished like a phantom. My opportunity had evaporated as quickly as it presented itself. I was crushed and spent the rest of the day regretting not taking more immediate action to lasso my prize.
