A deviated nasal Septum is a very common medical condition in children as well as adults. WHAT IS A NASAL SEPTUM? The Nasal Septum divides the Nose into the Left and Right sides. In the front portion it is largely a malleable cartilage and is bony towards the back portion (posteriorly). HOW DOES A SEPTUM GET DEVIATED? Strating off from the womb either due to a genetic defect in tissue structuring or when pressure of the amniotic fluid on one side shifts the extremely malleable septal cartilage to one side a child may be born with a deviated nasal septum. Subsequently as the child grows sometimes even trivial childhood trauma can cause a minor fracture of the nasal septum. This most often happens when a child falls or hurts the nose while learning to walk. Later on in life a nasal septum can deviate due to injury at sports like cricket, boxing etc. Road traffic accidents with facial injury are also a cause of septal deviation. Sometimes a large polyp or turbinate or any other swelling on one side of the nose can cause the septum to shift to the opposite side. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF A SEPTAL DEVIATION? Nasal blockage Nasal bleeding Mouth breathing – as a consequence of chronic nasal blockage Headache and cheek pain sometimes WHEN SHOULD THE NASAL SEPTUM BE OPERATED UPON?
