The aptly named CyberDog features an Nvidia brain, a series of sensors and servos made by Xiaomi. It also uses open source algorithms. Xiaomi is giving 1,000 examples of the robot to developers, engineers and fans, but there is no information on general availability. After stamping its authority on the smartphone world and announcing its electric car plans, Xiaomi is leaping headlong into the robotics space. At its Mi Mix 4 launch on Tuesday, the company announced a surprise new addition to its range of devices: a new quadruped robot called the CyberDog. It's effectively an advanced mechanical mascot in the same vein as the Boston Dynamics Spot, albeit a little creepier. However, Xiaomi believes that this robot is a testament to the company's "engineering prowess" and serves as a test bed for robotics enthusiasts. Let's start with the processing power. The "brain" of CyberDog consists of Nvidia's robust Jetson Xavier NX module, which includes 384 CUDA cores, 48 Tensor cores, six Carmel CPU cores and two dedicated deep learning cores. This module captures and processes information from the 11 CyberDog sensors that enables and reports the robot's movement throughout the world. That move uses Xiaomi's custom-developed servos to perform tricks like back flips and other "high-speed moves" of up to 3.2 m / s (11.5 km / h or 7.15 mph). The sensor array also uses multiple cameras placed on the robot's body. This includes an Intel RealSense D450 depth sensor that enables object tracking and obstacle avoidance. Xiaomi explains that this allows the CyberDog to follow its owner and avoid cheating, just like a real dog. Speaking of which, CyberDog also responds to verbal calls. The robot can be activated using an activation word or controlled by others, while other voice commands and assistants are also supported. There are plenty of I / O available too, including three USB-C ports and an HDMI port. This allows developers to add hardware or incorporate their own software cocktails. You are unlikely to want a robotic dog in your home, but Xiaomi's CyberDog seems like a proof of concept more than anything else. The company is handing out 1,000 CyberDogs to engineers, enthusiasts and fans to launch its own community of open source robotics developers. It is not known if or when Xiaomi will release CyberDog to the public. For now, the robot's availability appears to be limited to this initial release. But do not worry.
