Does a bullet ricochet on an AR500 steel target?

What happens to a bullet when it hits a steel target? Shooting hardened steel targets is becoming more and more popular these days. Yet, we still get a lot of questions from people wondering about ricochet. So, today I want to show you what happens when you shoot AR500 hardened steel so you can feel safe. The first thing I want to show you is some footage from a high speed camera. This is footage at 1 million frames per second from Werner Mehl. They have a youtube video where they show bullets being fired at a ton of different objects.    • 1 million fps Slow Motion video of bu...   You should definitely check it out. But watch this little clip of it hitting hardened steel... The bullet liquifies when it hits the target. And notice how the fragments splash outward in a perpendicular angle. Honestly I could watch that all day... Okay, now let me show you another way to look at this... This is a Hang N' Hook target set up with 3/8 thick AR500 steel targets from one of our other videos. First lets watch it in real time... Okay. Now, I am going to slow this down and take it frame by frame. I want you to notice the dirt below the target. You can actually see a perfectly straight line where the fragments splash down. It's actually quite amazing... Now it happens so fast that I want you to notice something else. You can actually see the dirt move before the target does... That's because the mass of the bullet is so small compared to the target. It's moving so fast, that the energy transfer takes time to move the target. So, the fragments splash out faster because they are light. As you can see, the most dangerous place to be standing is actually perpendicular to the target. The splatter goes in all directions. But if you are using hardened steel, the splash doesn't come back at you. This is why police officers practice on these targets even at fairly close range. Now, you should still use all the safety gear and I'm not saying you shouldn't be safe. You could still miss the target and hit a rock or something and have a ricochet. Also, you should never use regular stainless steel. That is a soft steel and bullets can behave erratically and even ricochet. But if you are shooting AR500 or AR550 steel, you can expect the bullets to kind of vaporize on contact. I f you want a steel target set up, check out our store at yankeethunder.com
