What is stammering & will speech therapy help? - Dr. Namrata Pai

Stammering is when a child is not able to speak in a continuous and smooth manner. So you might see hesitations, pauses, or repetition of words. Usually the onset of stammering is between 2 -4 years of age. The earlier the therapy, the better. Research has shown that if the therapy is initiated between 5 years of age, then the child can benefit a lot and improve his fluency of speech. After 5 years of age, he might need more emotional support because he would be more aware and more conscious about his stammering. Stuttering is the word for stammering and both of them mean the same. The speech therapist would focus on the child’s stammering issue by giving a very positive environment and also slowing down the rate of speech of the child. Also at times, we advise the parents that they shouldn’t be punishing the child or criticizing the child for having stammering. A very patient listening and not filling in words for the child and making him feel comfortable play very important role in stammering. The cause for stammering is not known. but at the same time, it is important that when we improve or modify the we way we react to the child’s stammering or stutter, we can see a lot of positive change, in his speech.
