Playthrough: Redd Volkaert's 4 Solos (Truck Drivin' Man)

Hey everyone! As folks who follow this channel will already know, I am a giant Redd Volkaert fan. Redd has been on the channel before (here’s the link:    • On the Record: Redd Volkaert Interview  , and he is not only one of the most creative and ingenious country/Western swing/jazz pickers out there, but he is also a genuinely excellent guy. All of that said, lately I have found myself working my way through as many of Redd Volkaert’s solos as humanly possible! Before folks ask, I have not really been taking the time to tab or chart them. This is all just part of my obsessive guitar nature, haha. Either way, the solos in this video really got me — Redd recorded a version of the classic “Truck Drivin’ Man” for the 2004 album “For the Ladies” in which he played four separate and distinct solos. I highly suggest any country pickers (especially anyone wanting to learn or get better at country picking) to check out Redd’s playing on this tune. Each solo, Redd takes the opportunity to change up the primary technique(s) that he chooses to showcase. Before anyone comments on it, yes, I have a different picking approach than Redd. In large part, Redd Volkaert sticks to using a flat pick with a hybrid picking approach. I come from the country thumbstyle camp, primarily sticking to a thumbpick and fingers. Also, I am not claiming that my voicings are the same as Redd’s, nor even am I claiming that this is 100% accurate. At the end of the day, working this stuff out by ear is just part of my learning process that I go through with any material I am working on at the time. So, let’s talk gear! In this video, I am playing a 1955 Fender Esquire through a 1958 Tweed Tremolux. The only pedal I have running is a UAX Delverb with just a small bit of reverb on. The mic combo on the front of the amp that you see is the classic tried and true Royer R-121 and Shure SM57 duo. This video was not sponsored by any company or individual.
