Todays video is all about outboard hydrofoils and 5 reasons you should listen to before you make the decision to drop $100 on what could be a junky piece of plastic. Let us know in the comments! Reason # 1 If the boat manufacturer didn’t install the hydrofoil, there’s a good chance it doesn’t belong there at all. This is pretty self explanatory! The manufacturer didn’t install the hydrofoil, so it might not improve performance and it could just be a tacky boat mod. If they’re so great, how come they weren’t included with the original design? I’ve heard that if you feel like you need a hydrofoil that could mean your boat isn’t mounted right. If so, a hydrofoil could just be a crutch for your problem. I’ve included a helpful article about how to boost your speed using engine height adjustments here: https://www.boats.com/how-to/the-outb... Reason #2. A hydrofoil could add unnecessary stress to the lower leg of your outboard. The hydrofoil could create added stress to wherever it’s bolted onto. It’s hard to say whether this would cause any long term damage or not. I have never heard or seen any damage caused by the added pressure on the lower leg but there’s always a first for everything. Reason #3: Hydrofoils are plastic bolt on junk and they are a complete scam. OK, well it is possible that the hydrofoil was just one of somebody’s get rich quick schemes selling what looked like the perfect bolt-on accessory for your boat under $100. It’s really up to serious debate whether these things actually work or not. It’s one of those things that makes you think “lucky son of a gun that invented that one” Easy to make, easy to sell, but do they really work? Who knows. Reason #4: Hard pass on drilling into my motor, but mostly always you are required to drill at least a hole or two. Some companies will claim you don’t have to drill or there’s minimum amount drill, but trust me, there’s always gotta be drilling if you want things properly attached. I’m not sure how everyone else installed their hydrofoils, but when I purchased the Banshee, it already had one and whoever installed it had to drill a few holes. It fit pretty well and actually was actually held in by 3 bolts and not utilizing the 4th hole, likely to avoid drilling another hole. This is a pretty standard engine in the 80’s and It definitely wasn’t a no drill situation. There’s no alternative. I’ve seen them attached with a sticky adhesive or some type of clip and that just doesn’t work. Think about it, it’s in the water all day. I guarantee this was a problem for some people. And could even damage propeller or even worse water skier or tuber if it came off. We will say however, if your good with installing things you will have no problems installing one of these on your own boat should you choose. Reason #5 Hydrofoils slow you down! One of the major reasons that hydrofoils suck is because they slow you down! Having a hydrofoil offers water resistance. It’s pretty common sense that drag = slower speed. Pretty simple. Check out our video “hydrofoil speed test”, I’ll drop a link here:    • Outboard Hydrofoil Top Speed Test ( B...   If you’ve ever dragged your hand through the water on a boat, you’d know that it takes quite a bit of effort to push through the water. it’s easy to see how the hydrofoil would create even a little drag, which would slows you down. When cruising at high speeds however, the hydrofoil is mostly out of the water since you’ll trim up a bit to reduce drag from the leg anyway. If there’s even a difference in top speed, it’s minimal from my experience. In conclusion, The hydrofoil must be tested to see how it will perform on a given boat with a given motor and a given operator. I did find that the Stingray Classic Senior helped positively in my situation - but more with stability rather than speed.
