Pensacola - Fort Pickens 9 October 2024

Pensacola Jane and Eugene dropped me off at George Bush Airport, Houston for my 2.35 pm flight to Pensacola, Florida. While waiting to board the little E145 aircraft, the lady in front of me was telling another passenger that she had been away in Texas and was flying not home in Florida, but to Pensacola to meet her husband who was fleeing their home town in Florida which was possible bracing for Milton’s visit. I’ll be spending some time with my friend Gwendolyn, who met me at Pensacola airport. We met 2 years ago in an online 13-week Italian class advertised on the Duo Lingo app platform. At the end of the class, so as not to forget what we learned and in an endeavour to progress, she set up a chat group and 6 of us from the class continue to meet up weekly to chat in Italian. It was a strange feeling yesterday meeting up in person, giving each other a hug, having “known” each other for a couple of years. When I told her that I had planned to visit Texas and asked if I could pop by to meet her, she was so delighted and invited me to stay with her at her dad’s house in Crestview (she is keeping an eye on him since the recent death of her mother). We drove to Pensacola Beach to see the ruins of Fort Pickens, a historic pentagonal United States military fort on Santa Rosa Island, named after American Revolutionary War hero Andrew Pickens. It is the largest of four forts built to defend Pensacola Bay and its navy yard. The fort was completed in 1834 and was one of the few forts in the South that remained in Union hands throughout the American Civil War. It remained in use until 1947. Fort Pickens was of interest in World War II to the U.S. Navy, and it was decided that the defenses of the fort needed to be strengthened. A specific threat was German U-Boats, which were already operating in the Gulf of Mexico. Wow! I never knew there was another history lesson to learn here! When one thinks of Florida, most of the time one thinks of Sun and beach resorts! The white sand of the beach caught my attention. It’s so beautiful. The area is used by hikers and campers and is also great for fishing and crabbing. We got there just after 5 pm and had just about an hour before sunset when the place closed. Besides seeing the ruins and the old cannons, I saw a flock of penguins fly past in formation. Gwendolyn had never seen a huge flock fly in formation and thought they were possibly fleeing from storm Milton. It was also good to see the Monarch butterfly flitting from flower to flower. And also a mocking bird, which I only know of from the title of the book “To Kill a Mocking Bird”. On our way to dinner, we stopped by the beach. There were some people surfing there, possibly taking advantage of Milton’s effects. We stopped to have dinner at Peg Leg Pete’s Oyster Bar. Gwendolyn had a fried Grouper and I had the shrimps. Yummy! We then drove about an hour home to Crestview.
