Approximately two decades ago, I, along with a few hundred audience members witnessed Pablo Batista’s participation in two exceptional performances at the Painted Bride Art Center. The first set included Pablo as a member of the undeniable musical force known affectionately as UGO (Urban Guerilla Orchestra). Pablo then proceeded to complement trombonist Jeff Bradshaw and Brass Heaven during what was already anticipated to be one hell of a second set. Both performances were jaw dropping, Pablo’s playing was sublime and the energy from each band was extraordinary! Sporting a resume that shines an ultra-bright light on his stellar career, coupled with an extraordinary ability to fit into almost any musical situation, conjured up an air of excitement at the prospect of spending time with the gifted percussionist Pablo Batista. Whether he’s leading one of his many Latin ensembles, backing the exceptionally talented HER, Alicia Keys, Jean Carne, Jill Scott, Teddy Pendergrass, Diane Reeves, Patti Labelle, Manny Oquendo and Libre, Eddie Palmeri, Kirk Franklin, the late Grover Washington Jr, or the rising star saxophonist Vincent Ingala, he’s not only comfortable and confident, but he’s also enhancing their sound. Well, if that alone wasn’t enough of a reason to invite Pablo into our station to film an interview. Taking advantage of an opportunity to peal away the layers of how he creates music, constructs sound, and adapts to any musical setting surely was. So, with physical copies of Pablo’s new and old music creatively being distributed on a thumb drive that’s housed in a miniature conga (yes, about the size of your thumb), we decided to invite Pablo in for a long overdue visit to the WRTI Performance Studio to catch up on all things Pablo Batista! -- J.
