Quick Release Bicycle Skewers

This time we've decided to tackle a problem we've been asked about so many times and that is how to use and refit the quick release skewer. The topic is so big that we've decided to split it into two tutorials. In this first part I explain how the quick release skewer works and how to undo it. GLOSSARY: Axle - The rod that goes through the hub (middle) of the wheel. This is where the wheel is held in the frame or forks. Conical -shaped spring. - There are two of these on a quick release skewer. They are cone-shaped coils that fold flat when squashed meaning that they don't interfere with the mechanism of the quick release when it is closed. Drop outs - The open parts at the bottom of the forks and the back of the frame where the wheels are fitted. Lock nut - The nuts at either end of the axle. When the wheel is in position in the dropouts, the locknuts sit against the frame. Lawyers lips - The ridges on the fork ends that mean that the front wheel can't fall out if the quick release isn't done up properly. They are a recent edition as a defense against lawsuits, hence the name. The disadvantage is that the front wheel no longer releases quickly as the skewer has to be unscrewed before the wheel can be removed or replaced.
