Wu speaks candidly about winning the silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and that it was a reward for a childhood in which she – and also her family – sacrificed so much for her to chase her dream. However, upon reflection, Wu says she may have taken her success for granted; like ticking a box. Indeed, she admitted the toughest question she has ever needed to ask herself as an elite diver was whether it – the training, the demands on the body and other sacrifices - were all worth it? As testimony to Wu’s determination and drive, she pushed on for 12 years to win her second Olympic medal, a prized bronze at Tokyo. While an important part of her journey has been to accumulate ‘little wins’ along the way to help her in those moments when she is under excruciating pressure, Wu insists ‘ego’ is not what drives her.
