Click the link below to get started! https://www.myadvocate.com/join/paul -- Some estate planning decisions are best made if discussed by couples prior to their meeting with the estate attorney. One of the discussion points should be: How do we leave our estate to our heirs? The most common way for couples to leave their estate is to leave it to their children equally - outright. This means that estate assets get divided equally, and the children or heirs can do with it as they wish - no restrictions at all. Other couples will have the discussion about whether they should the portions for one or more of their heirs in trust, perhaps because the child or heir is young, irresponsible, or disabled. And I always enjoy watching couples discuss who should be the trustee of a trust for their heir(s) - sometimes I need to step in and give them some parameters. Couples often should also discuss whether they will include their grandchildren in their estate planning program. They often discuss wanting to make sure that their grandchildren can get a college education. Then I watch the couple discuss how much they should leave to their grandchildren, and whether they should leave the grandkids a specific sum or money, or a percentage of the estate. Again, I'm often asked to provide some suggestions or give some parameters. And sometimes I watch couples discuss whether think that prior gifts or loans to children should impact the final distribution to their heirs. All of these things will be better thought out by couples if they have this conversation prior to meeting with the estate planning attorney.
