Living & Working in Oman: A Guide for Expats

Author: Dr. #pooyanghamari Housing and cost of living: As of my last update in 2023, in Oman, renting a one-bedroom apartment in the city center costs approximately $500 to $700 USD per month, while outside the city centers, the rent might be around $350 to $500 monthly. The overall cost of living is relatively moderate but is on the rise due to ongoing economic reforms. Tax: Oman does not levy personal income tax on salaries or wages. However, the government has discussed introducing a VAT system, which may be implemented to diversify revenues amid falling oil prices. As of my last update, the VAT rate was set at 5%. Job and business opportunities: Oman's economy is historically based on oil and gas, but there's a significant push towards diversification under the Oman 2040 Vision. This means emerging opportunities in sectors like tourism, manufacturing, fisheries, mining, and logistics. The Sultanate encourages foreign investments, especially those aligning with its diversification efforts. Quality of Life: Oman offers a peaceful and relatively relaxed lifestyle. The nation has a mix of modern infrastructure combined with rich historical and cultural landmarks. Its natural beauty, from mountains to deserts to coastline, is notable. Social Support and Education: There are several international schools in Oman, primarily in the capital, Muscat, catering to different curricula. Many expatriates live in Oman, leading to diverse community groups and social activities for foreigners. Healthcare: The Sultanate boasts a well-organized healthcare system with both public and private hospitals. While basic healthcare services are of good quality, specialized treatments might require traveling abroad. Legal and Administrative Considerations/immigration process: Foreigners need to secure a job to reside in Oman, and employers typically assist with the employment visa process. Family members can be sponsored under a family joining visa. The Oman government has been tightening regulations on foreign labor to promote the employment of Omani nationals, known as "Omanization". It's crucial to be updated on these changing dynamics when considering a move.
