The amazing lives of Weaver ants in my Permaculture garden!

Have you noticed some red coloured ants on your property that make nests with leaves? They are called weaver ants. Weaver ants are called so, because they weave their nests with a bunch of leaves, in which the queen can lay her eggs. Weaver ants are similar to honeybees. They have major and minor ants, with clearly defined roles. The small ants look after the eggs in the nest, while the large ants go out to forage. The weaver ants are useful because they eat a lot of small insects in our gardens. In some countries of South Asia, farmers actually introduce them in their farms to do pest management. What is most fascinating about the weaver ant is the nest it weaves with leaves. They pull a lot of leaves together and stick them together to form a ball or balloon of sorts. Imagine the weight of the ant, and that of the leaf! It takes many ants to come together to pull a leaf down. Ants hold on to each other's waists like a tug of war, while the first ant holds down the leaf with her mandible and the last one stands on the second leaf - and then they pull. They glue the nest together with silk from their larvae. Weaver ants can have hundreds of nests across many trees in one garden. Sometimes the nests dry out or get destroyed in storms. But a big reason for the ecological success of the weaver ant is its ability to weave a nest out of leaves, which is impermeable to water, is very strong and resilient. Weaver ants can be painful if they bite you, but they are quite useful and good to have on the farm!
