Today's travelling adventure is a drive along a scenic route in Wester Ross leading from Ullapool to Gairloch on the west coast of Scotland - a winding road that took me through valleys and tiny settlements, along rivers and miles of epic coastline and onto some of the Highlands most breathtaking views. Join me and find out why the North Coast 500 is Scotland's answer to Route 66! The road is also known locally as Destitution Road or more formerly as the A832. My Highlands road trip had barely started when I heard the unmistakable sound of a roaring river thundering through a forest close to the road, I found a parking spot (debatable!) and headed into the trees to investigate further. When I made it to the riverside I couldn't believe I was the only one there! The river flowed under an old bridge and then down towards the rapids crashing against huge boulders and rocks on its way - an incredible sight and a photographer's dream. After enjoying many more miles of magnificent landscapes I took a short detour to Victoria Falls close to Loch Maree, a waterfall that got its name following a visit from Queen Victoria in 1877. Victoria Falls is a five minute walk into the woods from the car park and totally worth a stop if you're passing. The road to Gairloch finally ended in.... Gairloch and after a quick look around the village I checked into the Gairloch Hotel overlooking the sea - it’s a lovely old building that had the appearance of an old waterfront mansion. Take a quick tour of the room and guess the price I paid for this one, it actually turned out to be the most expensive night on my whole NC500 road trip.
